Description: An app to keep up to date on the latest journal articles

  • Platform: Web, mobile
  • Cost: free
  • Ease of use:
    • intuitive user-friendly design – similar to browsing social media feeds.
    • Can be used equally well on phones, tablets, and desktops.
  • Tips for use:
    • Feed can quickly get filled up with the latest papers from your selected journals. IMO these papers are often interesting to glance at, but not particularly relevant to my research
    • Check KEYWORDS feeds: papers are filtered based on very specific key words.
    • Bookmark feature to save papers for later reading
    • Enable “Institutional Access” in settings so that the app can directly link you to uoft libraries to access the paper (I think this only works on mobile version – web version still catching up on some features)
    • Best use during the literature review stage of your research; helps if you have some idea about the specific key words related to your topic. In the initial stages of your research, it might be overwhelming to see all the papers listed under a general topic.
    • This app is useful for any field, but may be more geared towards science
  • Other pros/cons:
    • This has not been an issue for me, but Researcher notes that some journals are available only on the mobile app – the web version is still catching up
  • Other comments: Researcher is currently integrated with Mendeley and Zotero reference managers, and there are plans to expand to include EndNote.
